Billings Public Works prepares for intense snowfall and wind gusts, residents responsible for sidewalk snow removal

Billings, Montana – As Billings prepares for an upcoming heavy snowfall, the city’s Public Works department is gearing up for an even busier schedule to ensure road safety and clear passage. With the forecast predicting challenging weather conditions, the department is taking proactive measures to tackle the expected increase in workload.

Road Clearing Efforts Intensify

Derick Miller, the Street-Traffic Division Manager of Billings, outlined the current state of preparations. “Right now, we are out every night, we have had crews around the clock every night. With the wind that’s coming up, we’re expecting a 40 miles/hour gust, we are starting to have some drifting,” he said. This statement highlights the Public Works department’s commitment to maintaining road safety amid adverse weather conditions. The expected high winds and heavy snowfall present significant challenges, leading to concerns about drifting snow that could hinder transportation and road safety.

Residents’ Role in Sidewalk Maintenance

However, when it comes to sidewalk snow removal, the responsibility falls squarely on the shoulders of Billings’ residents. Miller clarified this aspect, saying, “Street and Traffic doesn’t manage any of the sidewalks snow removal. That’s all up to the property owners. City code says within 24 hrs. after the storm ends, they need to have the snow or slush cleared from the sidewalks.” This statement emphasizes the importance of individual responsibility in maintaining clear and safe sidewalks.

Community Involvement and Reporting Procedures

The City Code 22-406 further outlines the protocol for dealing with uncleared sidewalks or instances where snow is shoveled from sidewalks onto public streets. Residents can report such violations to the Code Enforcement Division by calling the Code Enforcement Clerk at 406-237-6146 or using the City’s non-emergency line at 406-657-8200.

Before taking the step to file a complaint, the city urges residents to check on their neighbors, particularly those who may be unable to shovel their walks due to physical limitations or other constraints. This approach encourages community support and cooperation, ensuring that everyone contributes to keeping the city safe and accessible during the snowfall.

As Billings faces the brunt of winter weather, the combined efforts of the Public Works department and community members play a crucial role in navigating the challenges posed by heavy snowfall. The city’s proactive measures and clear guidelines aim to minimize the impact of the weather on daily life, ensuring safety and accessibility for all residents.
