Montana Department of Transportation invites public comment on proposed resurfacing project along Shiloh Road in Billings

Billings, Montana – The Montana Department of Transportation is seeking public feedback on a proposed road improvement project that would resurface a section of Shiloh Road in the Billings area. Transportation officials say the project would focus on improving pavement conditions and extending the lifespan of the roadway.

According to MDT, the proposal involves resurfacing about three miles of Shiloh Road. The project would begin at the intersection with King Avenue and continue north until reaching the area near Rimrock Road. Officials say the improvements are intended to maintain the road’s condition and ensure that it remains safe and reliable for drivers who use the route every day.

The department is inviting residents, business owners, and drivers who regularly travel along the corridor to share their comments or concerns while the project remains in the planning stage.

Planned Improvements Along Shiloh Road

Transportation officials say the proposed work will include several types of pavement improvements along the roadway. Crews would begin by milling the existing road surface in certain areas, particularly within the roundabouts and along the stretch between Poly Drive and Rimrock Road. Milling removes the top layer of worn pavement, allowing a new overlay to be applied to strengthen the roadway.

After milling is completed, a new overlay would be placed on the affected sections to create a smoother and more durable driving surface. In addition, the project would include applying a seal and cover treatment, also known as a chip seal, to other areas outside the roundabouts. This treatment helps protect pavement and slow future deterioration.

MDT also plans to upgrade pavement markings and roadway signage as part of the project. These improvements are intended to enhance visibility and safety for motorists traveling along the corridor.

Officials say the main goal of the project is to extend the service life of the existing pavement while keeping the road in good condition for years to come.

If approved, construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2027. The timeline will depend on the completion of design work and the availability of funding for the project.

Transportation officials also confirmed that the proposed work will not require any new right-of-way acquisition or relocation of utilities, which helps minimize potential disruptions.

Residents who would like more information or wish to provide feedback are encouraged to contact Project Design Engineer Jacob Brotzler at 406-657-0266 or Billings District Project Development Engineer Kurtis Schnieber at 406-657-0269. MDT says public input plays an important role in shaping transportation projects and ensuring they meet the needs of the communities they serve.
