Helena, Montana – Drivers traveling on Interstate 15 in Montana should prepare for temporary traffic changes as a section of the Spring Creek Interchange will close for several days while construction crews complete pavement improvements.
According to the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), the northbound off-ramp at Exit 219 will be closed from Tuesday, July 14, through Thursday, July 16, weather and other unforeseen conditions permitting.
The temporary closure is needed so crews from Jeffery Contracting Inc. can remove the existing pavement and install a new roadway surface on the ramp.
Drivers encouraged to use alternate route during closure
While the northbound off-ramp is closed, MDT recommends that motorists continue north on Interstate 15 and use Exit 226 in Wolf Creek to reach Recreation Road.
Transportation officials said the Exit 219 northbound off-ramp will reopen as soon as the pavement replacement work has been completed.
MDT Engineering Project Manager Matt Widhalm acknowledged that the closure could affect many people traveling to outdoor destinations during the busy summer season.
“We understand that this off-ramp leads to popular recreational destinations during the summer months,” said Matt Widhalm, MDT Engineering Project Manager. “Our goal is to complete this work as safely and efficiently as possible while minimizing the number of disruptions.”
Officials noted that the southbound Exit 219 on-ramp will remain open throughout this phase of construction. Improvements to that ramp will be completed during a future stage of the project.
Motorists traveling through the work zone should be prepared for crossover traffic patterns, with traffic in both directions using a single lane on the southbound side of Interstate 15. Reduced speed limits will also remain in effect throughout the construction area.
A 12-foot width restriction continues to apply within the project limits. Vehicles or loads wider than 12 feet must be staged and escorted through the area.
Drivers traveling between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. may also experience brief interstate closures if crews need to escort oversized loads safely through the construction zone.
The current project began in April 2026, when crews started removing and replacing more than one foot of deteriorated roadway material on the northbound lanes of Interstate 15.
According to MDT, resurfacing work on the southbound lanes is currently planned for 2027, continuing the long-term effort to improve safety and driving conditions along this section of the interstate.
