Billings, Montana – The Montana Department of Transportation is asking residents in southeast Billings to weigh in on a proposed roadway project that aims to preserve and extend the life of an important neighborhood street.
According to the Montana Department of Transportation, the proposal would resurface approximately 1.5 miles of Stave Avenue, beginning at the intersection with 1st Avenue South and extending east to near 27th Street. The project is part of MDT’s ongoing efforts to maintain existing roads and prevent further deterioration before more costly repairs are needed.
Proposed resurfacing work and project timeline
MDT officials said the planned work would include seal and cover, also known as chip seal, along with crack sealing, fog sealing, and upgraded pavement markings. These treatments are designed to protect the current roadway surface, seal out moisture, and improve driving conditions while extending the pavement’s overall lifespan.
The project is currently in the planning phase, and construction is tentatively scheduled for 2027. MDT noted that the start date depends on the completion of design work and the availability of funding. No new right-of-way acquisition or utility relocations are expected, which officials say should help limit disruption to nearby properties.
Community involvement is a key part of MDT’s planning process, and the agency is encouraging residents, businesses, and roadway users to share feedback. Public comments can help identify concerns, suggest improvements, and ensure the project reflects local needs.
Comments may be submitted online through MDT’s public comment form or in writing to the Montana Department of Transportation Billings office at PO Box 20437, Billings, MT 59104-0437. MDT asked that all written and online comments reference project UPN 10704000 so they are properly recorded.
Residents with questions or who want to discuss the proposal in more detail are encouraged to contact Project Design Engineer Kyle Shuck at 406-670-8630 or Billings District Project Development Engineer Kurtis Schnieber at 406-670-9820.
MDT also reminded the public that information about other active transportation projects across the state is available through the agency’s website and its five-year Tentative Construction Plan, which outlines upcoming road and infrastructure work statewide.
